What is a custom transformer?
A custom transformer is any electrical transformer that does not appear in one of our standard ranges. The custom transformer has a unique combination of primary volts, secondary volts and throughput power. Our custom transformers are designed for specific customer requirements.
What is a custom transformer used for?
Custom transformers that we have manufactured in the past have been used for a variety of tasks. For example, we manufacture:
- Door gear controllers
- Power supply units
- Changing machinery supply voltages for foreign countries
- Test equipment

Limitations of custom transformers
The only limitations are due to the physical handling abilities within the factory. However, our factory in Runcorn is geared for handling transformers up to 1 tonne in weight and one metre cube in size.
Custom transformers and how to order
For a quote, we would need to know;
- the primary voltage and frequency required
- the secondary voltage and power requirements
- whether it is a single phase or three phase transformer
In addition, any standards that must be adhered to and the desired working temperature classification. For example, primary 415V 3 phase at 50 Hz, secondary 170 Volts at 20000VA with a Class E temperature rise to BSEN61558.
Express Transformers & Controls (2015) Limited can design and produce a wide range of transformers. Furthermore, these can be ferrite or iron cored and range in size from millimetres to metres across.
In addition, examples of our work can be seen in the gallery.
